The BT 2025 Switch off

If you’re not on top of the BT switch-off of its ISDN network already, here is our Q&A to help you to prepare.

Contents

When first announced, the Big BT Switch-off of ISDN seemed a long way off, but we are heading ever closer to the switch-off date. Here is our Q&A of the important things to know for the big switch off.

What is the BT ISDN switch off?

This is the name given after BT’s announcement in 2015 to the move away from the existing ISDN analogue phone network.

What are PSTN and ISDN?

PSTN, the Public Switch Telephone Network is a copper wire telephone network. ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) is a digital platform, in use since the 1980s, to deliver voice, video and other data.

When is the switch off happening?

In 2025, BT will be shutting down the ISDN and PSTN services and moving to a fully digital network. By the end of the switch-off, every phone in the UK will be digital.

Who will be affected?

This will affect everyone in business and at home. By the end of the rollout, every phone line in the UK will be digital, routing calls over IP (Internet Protocol).

Why is ISDN being switched off?

It’s an old system that’s becoming more difficult to maintain and it doesn’t have the capacity to compete with modern alternatives, either in terms of what it offers or how it copes with the demands being placed on it.

Will this deadline change?

Everything looks on track for the 2025 deadline to be met, and Openreach remain committed to achieving the date for the switch-off.

What devices or services will be affected?

Everything connected to PSTN and ISDN lines, not just phones. It includes alarms, door entry systems, lift phones, CCTV, faxes, EPSO machines etc.

How do I know if my line will be affected?

You can talk to us and we can advise you on what you need to do and how to be ready for the switch-off.

Will the switch off affect my internet connection?

It could be possible that you need to increase available bandwidth and upgrade your internet connection to make the most from the new digital functionality you will have access to.

What is replacing PSTN and ISDN?

Calls will be delivered using IP (internet protocol). This means you only need an internet connection for your communication devices to work.

What are the benefits of moving to VoIP?

  • Call quality will be better and digital systems will offer a lot more features.
  • More integrated communications systems on more devices.
  • Cost may also be reduced, both in terms of calls and the infrastructure you need.

My current telecoms contract is ending. What should I do?

Make sure any new contract you sign is an IP solution because that means you’ll be ready for the switch before it happens.
