What should I ask my IT support provider?

IT support provider

A good IT support provider should be able to give you reassurance that their services will enhance and protect your systems. Whether you plan on starting with a new provider or want more reassurance from your existing one, it can be good to know what you should ask of them.

Staying complacent about your services may mean that you miss out on security patches and other implemented changes which could rectify speed or usage issues. Consider what you like about your previous or existing provider, as well as where improvements could be made. This can enable you to formulate some great questions to figure out how your needs will be met.

What is included in the SLA?

Before you sign anything, you should first investigate what is included within the service level agreement. This will set out your rights, as well as what your IT support provider will do when you need support.

Reading the fine print could help you to pick out any discrepancies that weren’t mentioned to you during any initial conversations. These can include additional fees for emergency responses, or how quickly an IT support provider may respond when you need support.

Instead, when you are with a good IT support provider, you will find that the details included within the SLA will match up with the information you were previously given.

What level of IT Support does your business need?

At Syn-Star we never want you to pay for services that you don’t need, that’s why we have broken down our services into two packages.

What backups do you offer?

Having backups of all your business data is crucial. There are a variety of reasons that could contribute to data loss, including human error and malicious attempts on your systems. Storing information securely elsewhere could help to mitigate damages should any issues arise.

A single backup may not offer adequate protection, especially if something were to happen to it. You should want your IT support provider, at the very minimum, to have both a physical and cloud-based backup of your most important data. Ideally, all data should be included.

Each backup should be held to the same strict regulations and GDPR requirements as those found on your machine. This can include encrypting the data so that, if a problem does arise, sensitive or confidential information is not accessed without authorisation.

How many networks does my Wi-Fi have?

As with your backups, you should also have more than one wireless network. Should there be an issue with that network, your employees and clients alike will lose all access to the internet. Therefore, you may find it beneficial to ask your IT support provider to setup more than one network. This can allow for different departments to have their own designated network, as well as a guest network setup solely for client or visitor use.

Setting up Wi-Fi networks should be a relatively simple task for an experienced and trained IT support technician. Your IT support provider should listen to your queries and concerns about wireless networks and rectify any weaknesses. This can include ensuring that networks are encrypted, as well as the strength of password security.

Is multi-factor authentication used?

Any good IT support provider should take steps to always ensure data and system security. You need to question your current provider on whether multi-factor authentication is set up for each account on the system and, if not, why?

While setting strong passwords, and changing them regularly, can help to keep unauthorised users out of your accounts, you may want to set up an additional layer of protection. Multi-factor authentication involves inputting a code sent to your email, via text, or through a designation authenticator app. This way, even if your password or login details become compromised, this additional layer of security can help to prevent access to your accounts.

Thinking of Switching Suppliers?

If your thinking of switching IT Support providers, you may be interested in how the on-boarding process works before you make any decisions.

We’ve created a free brochure outlining all the steps within our simple 4 step on-boarding process ensuring you get 100% clarity from day one.

Is my IT support provider prepared for the BT switch-off?

Although your IT may be integral to your business, you may also want to think about how it can affect your communications. Any good IT support provider will already be putting steps into place to combat the BT switch off. When this occurs, all analogue phone lines will be phased out to make way for digital communications.

You may want to find out what VoIP services your IT support provider can offer. There are several different companies that offer telephone communications over your regular internet. However, your IT support provider should consider your business usage and needs to match you with the right style of VoIP, including handsets or headsets, to streamline your calls.

What are the reviews like for my IT support provider?

While asking questions directly to your IT support provider can be insightful, you may also find it beneficial to see what current and previous clients have to say. In doing so, you may be able to pinpoint a company’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as see what their support is like.

Using a variety of review sites, including Google, can give you some background information regarding how a company operates. You may also want to check the Glassdoor page for your IT support provider as, sometimes, employee opinions can also help you to work out whether a provider’s working methodology match up with what you need. Signs of high turnover or employee dissatisfaction could indicate that this is not a reliable IT support provider, and you may fare better working with a brand who values both employees and clients.

I want to change my IT support provider

When looking for an IT support provider, you want a company who will look at the latest threats as well as those that may be upcoming in the next 12 months. Asking a prospective IT support provider different questions regarding how they operate and the services they offer can allow you more peace of mind about the stability and security of your business IT.

Your computer systems are vital throughout the working day, as well as for business success. Therefore, it is important that you partner with an IT support provider who will seek to learn your systems, needs, and work proactively. This can help to increase uptime and keep your systems in good repair. Contact Syn-Star today to find out how we can modernise and upgrade your technology for a more efficient working day.
