Gigabit-capable broadband offers download speeds of at least 1 gigabit per second (1 Gbps or 1,000 megabits per second, Mbps). With such speeds, you could download a high-definition film in under a minute. Sounds good, doesn’t it?
This type of broadband can be delivered through various technologies, including full fibre, high-speed cable broadband, and potentially wireless solutions.
Currently, new gigabit-capable networks are mainly being constructed using full fibre technology. Virgin Media O2 has completed upgrading its cable broadband network to gigabit speeds. In the most remote or hard-to reach areas, wireless networks might be the most cost-effective option.
Project Gigabit aims to provide digital connectivity to homes and businesses that are not covered by existing broadband suppliers’ plans, ensuring that even the most remote parts of the UK get the connectivity they need.
The Government has promised £5 billion to fund the roll-out of gigabit-broadband to the ‘hardest to reach’ premises in the country that will not be reached by private investment (20% of the UK). This is around 5 million premises, mostly in rural areas.
The funding programme is called ‘Project Gigabit’ and is delivered by Building Digital UK (BDUK), an executive agency within the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).
Project Gigabit has three main parts:
By delivering fast and reliable connections, Project Gigabit will uplift predominantly rural and remote communities across the UK, while also addressing areas with poor connectivity in urban settings.
With the fastest broadband, businesses can boost their productivity and create a far-reaching online presence.
As of April 2024, 80% of UK premises had access to gigabit-broadband, up from 73% the same time last year according to the telecoms regulator, Ofcom.
In October 2024, the broadband data website Thinkbroadband reported that gigabit coverage was at 85.39% after hitting the 85% mark in September 2024. Thinkbroadband, however, uses a different methodology than Ofcom and publishes its data weekly, often showing slightly higher coverage figures.
It seems that there has not only been a steady progress to carry out the government’s plan to provide the UK with decent broadband speed, but the target has been reached ahead of time.
The government’s nationwide coverage target by 2025 seems plausible as there is now less than 15% of premises to complete over the next 5 years. Industry stakeholders also think that this target is realistic, but it will require public funding support.
It is also worth mentioning that the original deadline for nationwide gigabit coverage was set out for 2025, but due to budget cuts a 5-year delay was announced in 2020.
As part of its strategy to roll out gigabit broadband, the Government is implementing policy reforms to simplify infrastructure development for the telecoms industry and foster a competitive market for new networks.
These reforms include making it easier to access land for installing infrastructure. Industry stakeholders have also been advocating for additional tax relief on new gigabit investments and for the Government to address skilled labour shortages that could hinder the roll-out.
1. High Productivity: Gigabit broadband offers previously unseen speeds, reducing wait times for downloads/uploads and boosting overall productivity.

3. Improved Video and VoIP Quality: Ensures HD/4K video calls and clear VoIP connections without interruptions, essential for remote and hybrid work setups.
4. Scalable for Growth: Can handle numerous devices without lag, making it ideal for growing teams and IoT-heavy environments.
5. Future-Proof: Prepares businesses for evolving tech and increased data demands, reducing the need for constant upgrades.
6. Enhanced Backup & Recovery: Enables fast cloud backups and rapid recovery from data losses, minimising downtime.
7. Cost Savings & Efficiency: Improves workflow and reduces overall costs by increasing productivity and reliability.
8. Lower Latency: Supports real-time applications and virtual desktops, creating a smoother experience for remote employees.
If your business relies on cloud computing, needs to support a large number of users and devices, or simply wants to future-proof its operations, gigabit broadband is a worthwhile investment that can yield both immediate and long-term benefits.
