What is a wired network?

As the name implies, a wired network uses cables that plug into devices to connect them to the internet or to other networks, through an ethernet cable or wall jack.

Advantages of a wired network

Wired networks have served their users well since the introduction of IT systems, and they continue to offer many advantages:

  • Stability and reliability: Using cabling to connect physically to network ports reduces latency and the possibility of losing your connection to the network
  • Fast Speeds. Wired connections have traditionally offered faster speeds
  • Privacy: A wired network isn’t visible to other wired networks, which means no interference with its connection while still allowing networks nodes to communicate with each other
  • Security: No unauthorised users can connect to the network without a physical link
  • Cost: Hardware required for a wired network is durable, with a longer lifespan

Disadvantages of a wired network

Nothing is perfect and wired networks do have their disadvantages:

  • Less mobility for users: To stay connected to the network you need to stay connected to the cable and the cable to a port, so you are tied to a specific location
  • Installation time: It can take longer to install a wired network, and it tends to be more disruptive if installation is being done after an initial building fitting
  • Maintenance: Physical servers need attention and the know-how to maintain them properly. There’s also a wider physical infrastructure to be maintained
  • If not laid properly, wires can make a space look untidy, be a trip hazard or become disconnected easily by accident

What is a wireless network

A wireless network transmits signals for wireless IT devices to communicate to each other without cables. Access points can be used to amplify Wi-Fi signals so that devices don’t need to be near a router, and “hotspots” can be created in public places such as cafes, hotels and business centres.

Advantages of a wireless network

The introduction of wireless networks brought many benefits:

  • Reduced cost: No wiring and less physical hardware, with associated maintenance, reduces set-up and ongoing expenses
  • Quicker and easier because less physical hardware is needed
  • Can grow with your business: It’s easy to expand a wireless network as your needs change
  • Good security: Advanced networks come with robust security, tailored to manage wireless environments
  • Greater productivity: The ability to work with colleagues from different locations on common documents helps drive collaboration and productivity
  • Fits the modern workplace: Workers are free to move around the office and benefit from hot desking, hybrid working or BYOD initiatives. Guests can also join networks when invited

Disadvantages of a wireless network

As for a wired network, wireless networks also have their issues:

  • Networks can be susceptible to interference from other networks or other wireless devices. Signals can also be obstructed, and network strength varies between locations. This can impact on the quality of a connection and its performance.
  • It’s easier to intercept wireless signals. If effective security protocols, such as encryption, aren’t put in place, users are at risk from cyber attacks
  • Wireless network speeds are increasing but they may still not be as fast as a wired connection

How to choose the right type of network

As we’ve seen, both wired and wireless networks have their pluses and minuses and there is no answer to the question of which is best. Finding a good network depends on your specific needs, budget, and resources.

Your choice may be driven by security factors, the size of your organisation and how it works, the importance of a reliable and consistent connection, and the number of remote workers you have. It may even be that you need a hybrid approach of wired and wireless connections.

Wired vs Wireless networks: How to make the right choice?

Expert advice should help you to make the right networking choice for your business but you should avoid anyone who tries to sell you an off-the-shelf solution. Even if you have your preference, implementing it so that it delivers an effective and reliable network will also need specialist skills and experience.
