Businesses are looking to improve their cyber security to help defend themselves against cyber-attack and prevent the disruption and potential financial loss they cause.

We take a look at how Cyber Essentials accreditation can take you one step closer to achieving that goal.

Quick navigation

Living in a digital world

The world we live and work in is increasingly digital.The pandemic has speeded up this change as the way we communicate with friends and family, and work in times of lockdown, require us to embrace digital technologies faster; but was a path we were already on.

Also taking full advantage of increasing digital activity are cyber criminals.Some use highly sophisticated attacks while others are opportunistic but no less disruptive.Cyber Essentials accreditation offers an important way for businesses get better at protecting themselves from the online threat.

What is Cyber Essentials?

Cyber Essentials is part of a UK government initiative to help businesses by providing standards and guidelines to protect against cyber-attacks.By having a clear set of directions, it’s hoped that businesses will adopt best practices to guard against the most common threats.

Based on that principal, Cyber Essentials considers core aspects of cyber security and covers five key control areas to protect your devices, services and data:

  1. Boundary firewalls and internet gateways
  2. Secure configurations
  3. Assess control
  4. Malware protection
  5. Patch Management

What is Cyber Essentials Plus?

You can also take your Cyber Essentials further with Cyber Essentials Plus.Where Cyber Essentials requires you to implement the five security controls and is based on your self-assessment of the implementation of the controls, Cyber Essentials Plus takes this further by requiring an on-site assessment of your IT security by an accredited expert.

How does Cyber Essentials accreditation benefit my business?

Time, money and resources are precious when you are running a business, so everything you do must have a purpose and count towards your strategic goal.No matter the size of your organisation, cyber security plays an essential role in protecting your business, enabling it to operate more effectively in cyberspace and be competitive to achieve its goals.

Cyber Essentials is critical to achieve this, offering a number of benefits:

  • Enables businesses to demonstrate their cyber security credentials and commitment, building credibility that they are proactive in managing cyber security and offering a competitive edge when attracting new clients;
  • Offers peace of mind that you have good practices and regime in place to manage cyber security, allowing you to focus more on other areas of the business;
  • Enables you to bid for government contracts as the UK government has made it compulsory for suppliers to be compliant with the Cyber Essentials scheme
  • Reduces the cost of cyber insurance;
  • An opportunity to do an audit of your cyber security measures and provide a clear understanding of your current ability to protect against cyber threats and highlights areas at risk;
  • Defending businesses against the most common cyber-attacks, laying strong foundations upon which to continue building your cyber security;
  • Demonstrates to customers and vendors that you take cyber security seriously and offers them confidence they can work with your securely and will manage their data safely;
  • Supports GDPR compliance by protecting data against unauthorised access and theft, helping to avoid potential fines.

The long-term impact on business

Not knowing where to start with an assessment of your cyber security is a challenge for many business, especially those without their own IT specialist.

But once Cyber Essentials provides a starting point, some clarity over the critical risks to guard against and how to put measures in place, they can start on their journey of adapting and grow their defences in line with business development, protecting their operation as they achieve their strategic goals.
