Windows 10 End of Life – Is Your Business Prepared?

On 14 October 2025 Windows 10 will be fully end-of-life. Syn-Star recommends that you update your systems before the deadline to avoid downtime.

Windows 10 has been a great success of Microsoft. Its release in 2015 was a significant turning point offering modern, flexible and user-friendly applications and tools to users. It has been serving us well for nearly a decade but sadly, it is being retired.

Please note that Windows 10 support has officially ceased as of October 14th 2024, this means if you are still running Windows 10 you will no longer receive support and this could pose a threat to your business.

Click here to find out how to update to Windows 11.

In this blog we explore what this means and what steps you need to take to prepare your business for the future and the new Windows 11 operating system.

What does End of Life Mean?

From 14 October 2025 Microsoft will no longer provide the following for Windows 10:

  • Receive free monthly security update releases
  • Receive technical support from Microsoft
  • Receive bug fix patches

This means that support from Microsoft will cease completely. Effectively, on 14 October 2025, Windows 10 will become dysfunctional and vulnerable to security threats.

The Risks of Running an Unsupported Windows 10

Preparing to upgrade your organisation’s operating system is a major task. You will need to invest time and plan it carefully. You don’t want to leave things until the last minute because you need to ensure that all your devices and applications work seamlessly with the upgraded version.

On top of that, Microsoft announced the minimum hardware requirements for its new operating system which could mean that some of your devices may not be able to support the new version. In which case, you would also have to invest in new hardware.

Yes, technically speaking, you could choose not to update your operating system but that will have detrimental effects on your organisation such as:

  • Employee dissatisfaction: imagine working with applications that continuously crush. Employee morale and efficiency would decrease a great deal.

  • Vulnerability to cyber threats: as you will no longer receive security updates for Windows 10, your entire system will be weaker, and vulnerabilities will be easily exploited by hackers. According to IT Governance, updates and patching are crucial for effective cyber security.

  • Compliance Issues: Cyber Essentials and other industry regulations require regular software updates, and many customers will only work with organisation who comply with these.

  • Compatibility Challenges: If your operating system is not up to date, it will be less likely to integrate seamlessly with other applications and tools having a grave effect on productivity.

  • Lack of support: organisations will no longer receive help or guidance from Microsoft if a problem arises.

  • Reputational Damage: In case of a successful hack carried out on your business, your clients might lose trust when they learn that the breach could have been prevented had you taken the necessary steps.

What are Your Choices when Windows 10 Reaches End of Life?

Updating Windows 10 may seem like a bigger task than you can handle or want to deal with on top of your daily operations, but you do have some options to ensure continued uptime, productivity and stability of your business. Here are the steps for you to consider:

  1. Upgrade to Windows 11

This might be the most proactive option to ensure continued operation and security.

  1. Continue Using Windows 10 and Pay for Updates

You may want to consider paying for extended updates to be able to carry on using Windows 10 securely. This may be a great solution if you find that you would have to invest a considerable amount of money into new hardware that supports Windows 11.

  1. Research Alternative Operating Systems

There are other operating systems available for you to look at such as Linux or macOS. Both offers robust security and a wide range of applications. You may need to consider that it may take some time for your employees to get accustomed to a new operating system which may temporarily reduce productivity.

Overall, you need to think about the long-term implications of your choice and what would be most cost-effective solution to ensure that your organisation runs smoothly after the deadline of 14 October 2025.
