Slow computer problems: changes to your working practices

Your computer needs to run efficiently for you to get the most out of your working day. A slow computer can be caused by both hardware and software issues, meaning you need to consider the different ways you use the machine to impact its speed.

A slow computer can have a variety of negative effects on your business. It could waste time, which equates to money lost through wages and less sales. Alternatively, poor computer care could see you needing to pay more than average to fix your machine.

Full storage

The amount of storage available on a computer will differ depending on the size of hard drive used. However, infinite storage does not exist. A slow computer can be caused by your hard drive filling up. This may affect the time it takes to access and open your files, as well as program speed.

Many of those documents may be crucial for your business, either going forward or stored securely as part of your auditing process. Rather than assume that nothing can be done, you may instead want to think about utilising cloud storage solutions. In particular, Microsoft SharePoint and OneDrive can be great for business use. These will enable each of your team to have both their own personal storage space and one shared with the wider team.

Since these are cloud-based, your files could be accessed remotely, which may be vital if you need to work elsewhere or your device breaks. Setting secure passwords and utilising multi-factor authentication will help to keep your files out of the hands of unauthorised individuals.

Outdated hardware

The different hardware used can also contribute to a slow computer. While your motherboard could last for between one and two decades, your hard drive may only have a lifespan of three to five years. As each component ages, it may no longer work to an optimal level.

Dedicated IT support can take note of the hardware used within your business, keeping track of its age as well as any wear and tear. This can allow you to plan and replace any items before they lead to a slow computer or other running issues.

Uninstall unused programs

Some of the programs and apps used within your business may be vital or used regularly. You will then need to ensure that your hardware is well-equipped to deal with these items. However, there may be a number of programs that are no longer used, which can contribute to a slow computer.

It can be good practice to regularly audit any programs installed on each machine and run a full uninstall on those that are no longer needed. Clearing the cache and removing associated files can greatly help to free up space which, as discussed above, could cause slow computer issues.

Lack of system updates

Failure to update your system can be another leading cause of slow computer problems. Your operating system may release several updates to fix bugs and patch up your security. Without these, your system may not run properly. In certain cases, this may also limit how much you can do on your computer, as well as which apps you can install and use.

A slow computer is just one of the effects of a lack of updates. At the very worst, this could see you become a victim of cyber-crime or lose important documents. Any good IT practitioner should set aside time each week to check for, download, and install updates.

Poor cyber security measures

It isn’t just the updates that make up your cyber security. You should also consider your overall risk. Approximately 2.39 million instances of cyber-crime have plagued UK businesses in the last year. There is a chance that you may already be part of that statistic. While cyber security measures can help to keep hackers at bay, they can also improve your slow computer problems.

One of the most frightening reasons for a slow computer can be due to it containing malware or other hazards. Robust anti-virus usage, including updates, as well as consistent team testing and training could help to protect you from the variety of dangers on digital platforms.

Physical maintenance issues

Looking after the physical welfare of your slow computer could really help with speed issues. You need to make sure that there is enough airflow. A machine which overheats may run far slower than one that is properly cooled. In the worst instances, an overheated computer may completely switch off, especially if parts have been corrupted or destroyed in the process.

Speaking to an IT technician could help you to make changes that will benefit the welfare of your machine, transforming a slow computer into a healthy one. This might involve adjusting and cleaning out any fans, as well as resituating the computer so that there is room for adequate airflow all round.

Help with your slow computer

A slow computer is the bane of all businesses. Without consistent uptime and use of services, you may find yourselves unable to efficiently liaise with clients and complete orders. Opting for full IT support can help you to make a slow computer a thing of the past, as well as ensure that your cyber security strategies will withhold even the most complex of attacks.

With a large percentage of Britain basking in the sunshine to make the most of the heatwave, there has been a notable increase with the number of computers and mobile devices overheating and, occasionally, breaking.

Even though the sunshine may be blissful for a large number of people, it can be problematic for technology. Many mobile devices will inform the user of when they are overheating. In fact, when this happens, the devices safety mode can kick-in meaning users cannot use their phone at all until it has cooled.Hard drives will frazzle with the unbearable temperatures, data can be lost because of corrupting servers which aren’t kept cool, and what was reliable may not be for much longer.Syn-Star has highlighted its top 5 suggestions on protecting your PC in hot weather…
  1. Keep computers in a cool and dry area to prevent overheating – away from direct sunlight
This may sound obvious – but it is an important factor many do not consider. This is especially the case in non-air-conditioned offices. In addition, allowing air flow is the easiest thing you can do to help keep your computer cool. Remove any obstacles to the air flow.
  1. Ensure IT equipment has its own power circuit  If your computer receives its power from the same circuit of other appliances, such as air-conditioners and televisions, this can contribute to overheating.
  2. Clean your computer  The fans inside your computer have one primary role: to keep it cool. Dirt can play a huge part in slowing your fan eventually making it stop. Dust particles, pet hair and other fragments do make their way in to your computer.
  3. Never overcharge your battery  One way in which you can minimise the risk of your computer from overheating is by never overcharging the battery. Most people are guilty of keeping their charger connected until the battery is at 100%. Never do so, because not only does it cause overheating but according to some computer experts it limits the battery life.
  4. Small to medium-sized businesses with networks should invest in surge protectors to prevent power spikes which are normally transmitted through network cables
