Cyber threats: how to protect your employees

Cyber threats are very real. Without proper security in place, your business could be decimated by attacks from hackers or malware. Protecting your employees is imperative for them, and your systems, to avoid becoming victims.

In 2022, around 39% of businesses were targeted by cyber-attacks. Of these, 83% were phishing scams, often sent via email. Around a fifth of businesses targeted noticed a high-level threat had taken place in the form of ransomware or malware. These figures show just how easy it is for even the most cyber-savvy businesses to be targeted.

Ongoing team training

You may already push your team to undergo as much training and education as possible within their roles to help them achieve greater success. However, did you know that annual or one-off cyber security training isn’t very effective?

Cyber security training isn’t something you can set and forget. The most prevalent threats are ever-changing, meaning your training needs to adapt and grow. Instead, we offer ongoing training and testing to keep best security practices fresh in your team members’ minds. Doing so means that your business can remain clued-in to the latest growing threats. This involves sending out spoof emails that mimic existing threats. Should an employee click on a potentially harmful link, they will need to watch a short video and answer a quiz to compound their understanding. You will also be sent reports that will highlight who has failed. By addressing these weaknesses now, in a safe environment, you can be better prepared when a genuine attempt does occur.

Internal communications

It isn’t enough to rely on external sources to educate your team for you. You must also put the work in to ensure that people understand their level of risk. Including information and tips within your internal communications. This can include information relevant to both known current scams and the time of year. For example, closer to the end of the year you could include information about Christmas and holiday scams to keep your team aware.

When crafting your internal communications, consider how to draw each reader in. You may want to think about tailoring the emails you send to figure out which gets the most views. Requesting employees to fill in information, or even a quiz, can help to better engage your employees.

Increased security measures

Another way to protect your employees can be through tightening up the security measures in place within your network. This can be achieved in a variety of ways, including:

Doing so may not completely guarantee that malicious attempts will be unsuccessful, but it can greatly reduce your likelihood of becoming a victim of cyber-crime.

Access permissions

Adjusting access permissions for the different users within your company is another great way of preventing data breaches and stopping your team from unwittingly letting hackers in. This way, if an employee account does become compromised, there is less likelihood of the infiltrator being able to access more sensitive or confidential information.

We promote the use of Microsoft 365 and SharePoint, as this allows for cloud-based storage with those permissions in place. This means that even if a device is stolen, the documents and data will still be available to you if you have the correct login credentials. Combining this with a secure password manager, and tightening up your network, can also be crucial steps.

Support with cyber threats

Combatting cyber threats is imperative for modern businesses. Doing so doesn’t just protect your business, it can also give your employees the tools they need to traverse potential cyber threats in all aspects of their lives.

Book a meeting to discuss cyber threats and your business strategies, or simply to learn more about extensive employee training. It isn’t enough to simply hope your business won’t be targeted. Realistically, it will happen at some point. Therefore, greater preparation in the present could afford you more protection from cyber threats in the future.
