What does the BT Openreach Stop Sell mean for your business?
Here is what you need to know about the BT Openreach stop sell, part of the “Great BT Switch-Off”.
Here is what you need to know about the BT Openreach stop sell, part of the “Great BT Switch-Off”.
You may be familiar with the BT Switch Off of its ISDN and PSTN networks in 2025, but are you as familiar with the Openreach stop sell? If not, here’s everything you need to know to ensure you don’t get caught out when it comes to upgrading your business telecoms system.
The term “stop sell” is used by Openreach to signify the ending of sales of certain Openreach products, which means you will no longer be able to purchase the products covered by the stop sell. This is different from a product withdrawal because, under a stop sell, anyone with the product can continue to use it until it is finally withdrawn.
The BT Openreach stop sale is part of the BT switch-off scheduled for the end of 2025. If you have an ISDN line that you are currently using, it will apply to you as ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) is the ageing technology due to be replaced by BT by digital technology, such as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) systems.
Your ISDN line will continue to work, for now, but it won’t when the BT switch off happens.
Products coming under stop sell will have their supply affected long before the 2025 switch-off happens as newer technologies are phased in. Even if you are still able to find an ISDN line option, it may not be properly supported and eventually you will be required to replace it. So any new telecoms system you are currently considering should be compatible with, and using, newer digital technology.
Even though this big change is coming, there’s no need to panic. Openreach have been providing 12 months’ notice of any exchange that will be affected by a stop sell. Trials have already been underway in areas such as Salisbury and Mildenhall where the sale of analogue lines has already been phased out.
BT Openreach has specific criteria for where a stop sell will be implemented (where 75% of an exchange area can already access Full Fibre).
When this threshold is reached, Openreach will no longer permit the ordering, change or upgrade of copper-based products after the fixed, 12-month notice period. This will include analogue lines, ISDN lines, ADSL, FTTC and GFast products, and by September 2023, the intention is that no copper-based product will be available to order.
If you are using ISDN lines at the moment, whether solely for voice, for voice data, or for voice data and video, it’s worth looking now at what alternatives you can migrate to.
Instead of ISDN, you should consider using a broadband internet connection or technologies such as VoIP, for your communication needs. These technologies offer many advantages over ISDN, including higher data transfer rates, greater flexibility, and lower costs.
Starting the process as early as possible means you have time to consider all your options and how they can work with your other systems; to prepare for any additional cost implications; and to seek expert advice to ensure the changes you do make will give you a telecoms system that suits your needs long into the future.
