What is the ISDN switch off and how will it effect me?

The BT switch off is coming in 2025; the old copper analogue phone lines are being decommissioned and replaced by digital technology and Internet Protocol (IP) communications such as VoIP and SIP trunking. If your business relies on the old analogue lines, you need to ensure that you’ve switched over to a digital alternative by the time the switchover takes place in 2025.

Systems are already being migrated across the VoIP and SIP alternatives. There are no longer any new connections to ISDN lines and services supporting them are being scaled back so that ISDN line users have no choice but to switch.

In our blog we’ve already posted lots of resources to help you find out more about the ISDN switch-off, including our BT switch-off most Frequently Asked Questions.

What do I need to do?

If your business has ISDN lines but you haven’t yet started to plan how to switch, here are some initial steps you can take now:

  • Understand your equipment that will be impacted by the switch-off. You need to think about more than just phones; anything reliant on an ISDN line, such as an alarm system, will be impacted.
  • Check your existing telecoms contract to understand which services are covered, how much you are tied in and how your contract could limit the changes you need to make to your telephony system.
  • Check that your internet connection can support VoIP. Is it fast enough to deliver the service you need? What quality can it deliver?
  • Last but not least, make a plan. Any transition needs to be executed with minimal disruption to your business. This means planning your rollout and giving yourself time to find the right plan, infrastructure and partner to deliver the switch over.

What are the benefits of switching?

As well as saving BT money on maintaining a copperwire system, the switchover from ISDN will also bring many benefits to users:

  • Improved call quality with digital technology
  • Call analytics can improve efficiency
  • More flexibility by not being tie to a desk phone. Calls can be made from a range of devices in any location
  • Cost effective, as it’s easier to maintain, with good rates and you only pay for what you need
  • You can buy local numbers in any town to improve your local presence
  • An easy-to-scale phone system on which you can add and remove users as needed
  • It’s easier to set up, with no need to install phone lines
  • Integration to your CRM system
  • The new phone system can increase efficiency, flexibility and productivity

When should I start planning to make the switch to digital telephony?

If you haven’t started thinking about how the switch from ISDN will affect you, now is the time.

2025 seems a long way away and it needn’t be a long transition process, but the time needed will vary significantly depending on your current infrastructure. If you want to learn more about making the switch, take a look at our blog post, how easy is it to move away from ISDN lines.

Updating and upgrading your telecommunications is an opportunity to improve how your business connects with customers, promote collaboration and bring all your IT systems together into an integrated whole that will save you money. The sooner you start, the sooner you will start to see the benefits.

Finding the right IT partner for your transition from landlines to digital

Using this time to find an IT support partner who can help you switch from ISDN will give them time to understand your business, thoroughly assess your telephony needs and how to enhance your business operation.
