Is your business prepared for the end of Microsoft Windows 10?

If your business relies on Windows 10, now is time to take action after its end-date was announced by Microsoft.

In 2020 Microsoft announced that more than one billion people across 200 countries had chosen Windows 10 resulting in more than one billion active Windows 10 devices*. Now Windows 10 is to be “sunsetted” it’s likely to cause disruption for any unprepared business; here’s our guide to getting ready for the end of Windows 10.

What is Happening to Windows 10?

On 14th October 2025, Windows 10 will be considered by Microsoft to have reached the end of its life, to be replaced by Windows 11.

Reaching the end of its life means Microsoft will no longer be supporting or investing in Windows 10. Instead, it will be encouraging people to switch to Windows 11, or whatever it decides to call its latest operating system in the future, where it will be focusing its resources.

When Windows 10 reaches it’s end of life in October 2025, it doesn’t mean it suddenly stops working, but it does mean that it will no longer be supported by Microsoft. Initially, and gradually, feature updates will stop being issued until, by 2025 itself, Microsoft will cease to optimise the program or generate new security patches.

Without security patches to update the security on your system, your computer will be increasingly vulnerable from risks such as malware and viruses, and of being hacked.

You may also start to see compatibility issues as the operating system no longer keeps pace with the changes in the other systems working around it.

Should I switch to Windows 11?

Windows 11 was launched in October 2021 and at the moment anyone currently using Windows 10 can upgrade to Windows 11 for free.

If this is your intention, you need to be aware of the impact of upgrading regarding other systems you may be using and the differences the new operating system will mean for your business; this includes checking that your computer’s hardware is up to running Windows 11, which is more resource-hungry than its predecessor.

The benefits of switching to Windows 11

As the Windows 10 switch-off isn’t due until 2025 you may think it’s best to wait until then before switching, and to make the most of the operating system you’ve already invested in. But there is a number of benefits to switching to Windows 11 early and benefitting sooner from extra features:

  • A new interface with a reorganised start menu
  • Improved performance, including better web browsing
  • Increased security with extra protection to keep data secure, and better malware and hardware-based encryption
  • Ongoing design changes which support increased productivity through better collaboration tools for people working from different locations, including better integration of Teams
  • Easier to undock laptops: Windows 11 automatically minimises all programs when disconnected from a screen, automatically reverting back to the original screen position when re-connected
  • Windows 11 uses less power, so battery life on laptops should be extended

What do I need to consider before switching to Windows 11?

Windows 11 offers many benefits to its users, but before jumping into an upgrade you need to make sure your systems are ready and have the minimum specifications necessary to run Windows 11 efficiently and without disruption to your business.

It’s important to understand the processor and size of storage that Windows 11 needs to run properly. You also need to consider compatibility issues as you don’t want to install Windows 11 to then discover that other software that’s integral to your business operations doesn’t function fully with it.

Windows can also affect compatibility with your PC, as some new security features on Windows 11 rely on a CPU called Trusted Platform Module, but older versions of Intel and AMD processors don’t support it; this needs to be checked.

Making sure that you are ready to switch to Windows 11 will help ensure that your PCs and business don’t grind to a halt in 2025.

It also provides a much more realistic test of your systems, as testers behave as hackers would, giving a more valuable insight that reflects the real world.

Penetration tests are also conducted by specialists, so organisations using their skills benefit from their experience and knowledge to deliver deeper insights into systems, so that more specific remedies can be implemented to combat threats and deliver greater business continuity.
