7 Top Tips When Adapting To Hybrid Working

1. Use private Wi-Fi

Public wireless networks can be useful when in a pinch but, as much as possible, should be avoided for work purposes. A lack of security measures could greatly increase your likelihood of being hacked

Realistically, it may be a better idea to use a wired network if security is a concern. However, some hybrid working employees may be required to travel as part of their role. In these instances, it may be better to provide your employees with a portable Wi-Fi dongle solely for work use.

With so many people working remotely, we’ve seen an increase in our reliance on technology.

It’s become integral, not only to getting tasks done but also as an essential communications tool for collaboration among colleagues and with clients.

Quick navigation

now, more  than ever, it is imperative for business continuity to know how to keep our remote IT set-up running smoothly.

The challenges of supporting remote IT set-ups

Supporting remote IT set-ups to ensure they work efficiently and enable productivity presents a different set of challenges to those you face when employees work onsite.

On a daily basis, remote IT users and those who support them must contend with:

  • Keeping devices up to date with the latest software patches
  • Resolving IT issues quickly to maintain productivity, despite not being in one location
  • Keeping devices secure, even for those using their own devices
  • Preventing data loss through cyber-attacks or mismanagement
  • Maintaining good communications within a dispersed workforce
  • Home IT infrastructures unable to meet business needs
  • Business IT infrastructures not set up to support large numbers of remote users

14 key actions to keep remote IT running

The good news is there are several actions you can take to keep your remote IT set-up in full working order:

  1. Prepare for increased IT support requirements. Be ready to manage lots of individual set-ups rather than one office set-up, connecting through multiple channels rather than face to face and enabling a new way of working.
  2. Use data to understand the activity. Dashboards that monitor activity can check system health and accessibility and understand user activity to spot pressure points where extra resources are needed.
  3. Check for updates. The latest updates for systems and software should be installed regularly to keep running without glitches and to maintain cyber-security defences.
  4. Provide the right equipment. Users relying on their own devices can cause problems if their capabilities are limited, they are out of date or incompatible with other users. Security measures may also be weaker.
  5. Turn devices on and off. This allows operating systems to refresh, addressing many issues and prompting updates to be installed.
  6. Keep equipment clean. Remove dust and dirt so IT equipment is kept in good working order.
  7. Refresh the internet connection. This initiates updates and clears caches.
  8. Review IT accounts. Close any accounts, not in use and ensure active accounts are protected by strong passwords or multi-factor authentication to prevent unauthorised access.
  9. Check back-ups. Back-up systems should be working properly and important information backed up or stored on the Cloud for retrieval in the event of an IT incident.
  10. Clean up systems. Uninstall apps and software no longer in use and review which hardware is being used, making sure it’s up to date and fit for purpose.
  11. Invest in cloud-based solutions. Improved security measures, up-to-date versions of software and less reliance on local systems make Cloud-based solutions easier to maintain and more robust.
  12. Use VPN: This protects data online and boosts security when transferring data remotely.
  13. Create an IT policy and procedure. Make remote users aware of their responsibilities, requirements and the support available to them to avoid issues in the first place or address them promptly.
  14. Have a back-up plan. Manage outages or security issues so that users aren’t prevented from working and data isn’t lost.

Supporting remote IT set-ups

Although there’s much you can do to create an effective remote IT environment, supporting it presents its own challenges.

The demands placed on the time and resources of IT support teams increased with remote working, and this can distract them from longer-term strategic IT goals. Many businesses aren’t able to scale their teams to meet increased demand because it is hard to find qualified IT support, or it’s too expensive.

Finding an external IT support partner has been an effective route for many business owners to maintain their remote IT needs. They can scale up or down to meet demand, are deep experts in a variety of software and hardware set-ups, have access to the latest IT solutions and have collected much greater experience in providing IT support from afar.

Asking for help

Productivity, efficiency and business continuity are essential for any successful business, and a smooth-running IT set-up is integral to achieving these.

If you’re facing challenges in supporting your remote IT set-up, it may be time to reassess how you manage your dispersed teams. Contact our team at Syn-Star to explore which may be the right IT support for your business.
