Public wireless networks can be useful when in a pinch but, as much as possible, should be avoided for work purposes. A lack of security measures could greatly increase your likelihood of being hacked.
Realistically, it may be a better idea to use a wired network if security is a concern. However, some hybrid working employees may be required to travel as part of their role. In these instances, it may be better to provide your employees with a portable Wi-Fi dongle solely for work use.

Cyber Essentials and ISO 27001 are two recognised and regarded standards for getting your company’s cyber security in shape, but both offer something different. Here, we take a look at both to help you decide which is best for you.
ISO 27001 is the international standard created to help businesses of all sizes manage their information security processes to protect their data and assets. It details what’s necessary for a business to establish, implement, maintain and improve their information security management system (ISMS).
Cyber Essentials is a UK government accreditation that helps businesses protect their data, devices, internet connection and services against cyber-attacks, through a self-assessment process of specified control areas.
Although both accreditations are focused on developing standards to protect systems and data, there are some key differences in their approach and the breadth of their scope:
There are differences between ISO 27001 and Cyber Essentials, so for those businesses looking to build robust and long term cyber and information security and maintenance into the way they work, these two standards can complement rather than compete.
Cyber Essentials would be a good first step, putting in place cyber security controls, followed up by ISO 27001 to build an information security management system that develops what Cyber Essentials accreditation put in place, to broaden the scope of your information systems security.
The starting point for any investment must be to understand what benefit it delivers to your business. It’s also necessary to consider the resources, time and budget you can commit to achieving the standards.
The breadth of assessment and the ongoing maintenance required by ISO 27001 may make it a challenging first step for smaller businesses, whilst Cyber Essentials makes a better introduction to achieving an IT security accreditation because of the reduced number of controls covered.
It’s also worth considering what your business does, how much data is processed and the impact of digital technology on your day-to-day operations to assess which accreditation is most appropriate.
Client IT security expectations or an international client base may also influence your decision, as will your level of risk aversion and how much sleep you lose over not having a high level of systems and data security in place.
If a lack of expertise is a barrier to moving forward, it’s difficult to decide which accreditation is best for your business, you don’t know what cyber security and systems management you need or you want to know exactly what would be required to pass accreditation, our team at Syn-Star can help you navigate your way through these questions and many more, so you can make a decision with more confidence.
We take the time to understand your business, what you want to achieve and the processes you already have in place. We can work with you to understand how different cyber security accreditation would impact your business and then support you to achieve accreditation successfully.
