Here are our safe browsing tips with how-tos to ensure you have all of the information you use to stay safe online.

How to ensure you are browsing securely

Staying safe online at home and work is paramount to ensuring your IT continues to work at optimum levels. We have come up with a few simple how-tos so that you can set up the basics.

How to set up safe browsing on all browsers

Setting up safe browsing on different browsers is a great way to protect yourself from online threats. Here are the steps for some of the most popular browsers:

  • Open Firefox and click on the three lines in the upper right corner.
  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security.
  • Under Browser Privacy, choose StandardStrict, or Custom for tracking protection.
  • Open Edge and click on the three dots in the upper right corner.
  • Go to Settings > Privacy, search, and services.
  • Under Tracking prevention, choose BasicBalanced, or Strict.

Safari (Mac)

  • Open Safari and go to Safari > Preferences.
  • Click on the Privacy tab.
  • Check Prevent cross-site tracking and Block all cookies if desired.

Tips for Safe Browsing

  • Use a secure browser: Browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Edge have built-in security features.
  • Avoid clicking on search ads: These can sometimes lead to malicious sites.
  • Watch out for pop-ups: Be cautious with sites asking for notification permissions.
  • Update your browser regularly: This ensures you have the latest security patches.

Install a secure anti-virus

Most business machines will have a secure anti-virus installed as part of your company’s cyber security guidelines. However it is worth taking a deeper dive into what level of protection your anti-virus is providing you with as many free versions do not offer the sufficient level of protection that you may require. Check if the site you are visiting has a HTTPS

One very easy tip is to check if the site you are visiting has a HTTPS at the beginning of the URL.

What is a HTTPS?

HTTPS encrypts the data which is exchanged between your browser and the website, this element will protect your sensitive information from being tracked like passwords, credit card numbers and all personal details.

Looking for a HTTPS verifies you are connecting with the intended website which will help protect your from phishing attacks along with other types of online fraud.

What to do if you are questioning the safety of a website

When in doubt, don’t click. Ensure you are up-to-date on the signs.
