Cyber Essentials: 5 reasons why certification is vital to modern business security

Cyber essentials training may not be mandatory, but it can be vital for the modern business. Failure to include this could see your existing security measures become easily compromised, as well as a greater likelihood of security breaches made through your team’s actions.

Understand cyber threats

Any number of threats could greatly affect your business practices. The biggest cyber threats currently impeding UK businesses are:

  • Phishing – Malicious links received via email or by clicking on unsafe pages. Activity can also occur through downloading files that have not been adequately checked. This can include attempting to install unverified applications.
  • Malware – Items installed on working devices, sometimes without user knowledge of the download. These do not always remain on that individual device. Some may be able to traverse the company network, leading to serious data breaches and problems throughout your entire working systems.
  • Ransomware – Similar to malware, this could lead to significant financial loss for your business. Hackers may take control of your files and devices, leaving you unable to access them. From here, they would ask that you pay a ransom to regain ownership. Although it may be tempting to cave to the hacker’s demands, it’s important to note that, even when paying, there is no guarantee that they would return those services to you.
  • Internal threats – Sadly, there may be reasons why a present or former member of your team may act in ways that compromise your data security. Tracking your employee’s usage of systems and ensuring that any former employees no longer have access to company data can help to protect you, or at least figure out who is responsible for any problems that arise.

Impact on other businesses, even if they have security

With human life, we use vaccinations to prevent serious diseases from spreading. As long as the majority of people have security in place, herd immunity can help to protect those who cannot, or choose not to, vaccinate themselves.

This same pattern of thinking does not extend to the digital world. Problems within your network and systems can lead to data breaches for others who you contact. Your communications may be permitted within their security systems, meaning any issues on your end could go on to cause problems with their own systems. This means that viruses and cyber threats can quickly spread, creating a digital pandemic.

Educating yourselves on cyber essentials when you undergo that certification could mitigate these risks through better working practices

Build trust with clients

Client trust can really make or break a business. Without trust, you may find it hard to gain and retain clients. Should they find out that you don’t have efficient security measures in place, they may worry about sharing sensitive personal data with you, especially if you have suffered from data breaches in the past.

Ongoing trust with clients and suppliers can create long-lasting working relationships. These can also greatly improve the way that others view your brand.

You may find it useful to publicise that your team has undertaken both cyber essentials certification and cyber security training, showing details of courses or certifications you have received in terms of keeping your business data and, by extension, their information, secure from malicious activity.

Listing on the trusted register with NCSC

Another way of building trust, especially with those who don’t have previous experience with your company, can be to become listed on the National Cyber Security Centre’s list of those certified. To do so, you must have received a cyber essentials certification within the last 12 months.

For your first year, it may take around 30 days to complete your accreditation. This is due to needing to meet different criteria. However, once these systems are in place, updating your certification each year should take significantly less time.

Reduce insurance premiums

Cyber security insurance can be an important part of operating a business. Although you may do your utmost to reduce risks there is always a chance that something will be overlooked. This insurance can help to protect you from:

  • Expenses
  • Loss of asset
  • Investigations into cyber threats and breaches
  • Extortion and ransoms
  • Defence costs where fines or charges are submitted due to data breaches
  • Restoration of lost data

Much like other forms of insurance, it can be far better practice to have insurance in place and not need it than to assume things won’t happen to you and then left severely out of pocket.

Additional security measures and certifications could potentially help to reduce your yearly premiums, including:

  • Cyber essentials certification. Ensure that you meet all the criteria for the certification and keep those working practices in place. This way, you can efficiently gain fresh documentation each year.
  • Cyber security and dark web training for all employees. This should be refreshed annually, and new starters should complete as part of their onboarding process.
  • Penetration test certification. Ethical hacking will highlight the weaknesses in your existing security measures. This allows you to put more strategic security into place and prevent hackers from finding access into your data.

Cyber Essentials certification can help you to gain some footing against hackers and those with malicious intentions towards your business and its data. Syn-Star are equipped to help make this process significantly easier and support you on your journey to better cyber security.

This will show stakeholders and clients alike that you are proactive about cyber threats, and a company they can trust to work with.
