5 Options for unreliable broadband

Quick navigation

The cost to your business of lost connection

The cost to your business can be considerable if your primary broadband service becomes disrupted. Everyday operations will come to a halt. 13% of companies immediately start losing money following an outage and 46% will suffer a financial hit after four hours. However, considering that the average waiting time for service to resume is six hours, it’s surprising that only 13 per cent of businesses switch to a backup solution.

Option 1 - Second Line

The first option you have would be to add a second direct line on a different network, this would mean that if your current network was down for any reason, you would have this second line which feeds directly to you.

Option 2 - Leased Line

Getting a lease line for your business broadband is your second option.

The main advantage of a leased line is that it is a dedicated internet connection, meaning you won’t have to share your precious bandwidth with any other companies or private households. You will receive higher Upload Speeds and these will be symmetrical download & upload speeds.

The only disadvantage to this business broadband option would be, there is a slightly longer installation time as the installation of leased line connection is much more complex than the installation of conventional broadband connection.

Option 3 -Mobile Dongle

your third option which is a much faster solution would be to use a mobile dongle.

we depend on a good internet connection wherever we are. And mobile broadband has some great benefits you may not have considered.

Mobile broadband dongles allow you to get online quickly without the need for an engineer to visit your home. They’re incredibly simple to set up and will keep you connected wherever there is a 3G, 4G or 5G mobile connection (depending on the dongle you choose).

A dongle is a small USB ‘internet stick’ that allows you to access online services without needing to connect to Wi-Fi.

It can also be referred to as a Wi-Fi dongle, USB modem, internet stick, USB network adapter or USB mobile broadband stick. Dongles are popular because they offer greater flexibility than fixed line connections and can be used on the go.

Pros

  • Quick and easy to set up
  • Can be supplied alongside broadband contract
  • Gives you flexibility if you work from lots of different locations
  • Run from the battery on your laptop / computer so do not run out of battery.

Cons

  • Slower average speeds than many fibre broadband packages. Making it difficult to do high-data activities like large file downloads or 4K streaming
  • Coverage is dependent on the mobile phone reception in your area
  • Mobile broadband usually has monthly data limits
  • Can be expensive to use a dongle abroad

Option 4 - Bonded Lines

Bonded broadband lines can help deliver a cost-effective bandwidth by bringing together multiple broadband lines.

Bonded broadband is usually used If you need more bandwidth at an affordable price, if you are a rural business with limited DSL speeds or if you want to add resilience into your network and cannot afford downtime.

Option 5 - Satellite Business Broadband

Satellite broadband download speeds typically range between two megabits per second (Mbps) and 30 Mbps, depending on your satellite broadband provider. While this is nothing compared to fibre optic speeds, it’s on a par with standard ADSL broadband.
