BT Redcare is a form of alarm monitoring, providing continuous monitoring of a BT phone line linking an alarm system in your premises to a receiving centre. It provides continuous protection of your property.
By adding a Redcare monitoring alarm system to an existing alarm system, the appropriate emergency response service will also be notified when the alarm is activated, even if no-one is on the premises. For example, if a fire alarm is set off the Redcare monitoring alarm will also be activated to notify the fire service.
The effectiveness of the Redcare alarm system means it is recognised by the Loss Prevention Certification Board certifying security products and it can provide security for both businesses and private homes, which benefit from the protection of a monitoring system.
Many of the existing Redcare alarm systems operate using the existing Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), but by December 2025 this network will be switched off. This means that any system relying on this analogue copper network will no longer be supported or available when we all have to switch to a digital phone network.
According to BT, the traditional phone lines that supported the Redcare system are no longer fit for purpose, unable to keep up with the demands of a digital world were people want more, faster.
PSTN will be replaced by connections that are ‘fibre to the premises’ (FTTP) or Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SOGEA); traditional voice services will be provided by digital voice over IP (VoIP) services.
As with many other alarm signal systems, Redcare alarms use PSTN to dial out to an ARC (alarm receiving centre) when there’s a signal to be sent. When the transition is made to digital connections, these types of alarms will no longer be able to send their signals, making them obsolete.
This is obviously a significant issue given the function they have of notifying responders of a security issue, potentially leaving people they are meant to protect at risk. This has far-reaching implications for all sort of alarm systems such as fire, lift, intruder, CCTV and care alarms.
While December 2025, when the PSTN network will be switched off, seems a long way off, BT has put a “stop-sell” process in place, which means when areas around an exchange reach 75% fibre coverage, copper services will no longer be provided, and support will decline.
This means your Redcare alarm could be affected before the 2025 deadline.
