How Syn-Star can help with an alarm system switchover?

Our technical team at Syn-Star has years of expertise in communications, including the installation and maintenance of telephony and internet connectivity. We help our customers to understand their current systems and how The Big Switch Off will impact on all aspects of their operation, including existing alarm and phone systems.

The Big Switch Off will affect businesses in different ways, depending on their unique circumstances and how far along they are in their transition from analogue to digital telecoms.

Our solutions are tailored to suit your needs and your budget. We can also work with you to develop a practical timetable to roll out any changes, minimising business interruption.

If you would like to talk to us about your Redcare system, or any other analogue alarm system you have, we are here to help.

What’s changing?

In 2015 BT announced the end of PSTN and ISDN lines in what is being referred to as The Big Switch Off. This will change what underpins much of our communications technology, ending the use of copper wire phone lines. We will move from analogue to digital systems where all calls will be made over the internet.

PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) is currently used for telecommunications. This includes phone calls and faxes but is also used to send alarm signals for security devices.

ISDN (Integrated Service Digital Network) was introduced after PSTN and provided a faster dial up option through the internet.

The switch over to new telephony systems will happen by December 2025 and will reduce costs, improve speed and call quality, as well as increase functionality, so it will benefit businesses. However, there will be disruptions.

How will the PSTN switch-off affect alarm systems, such as Redcare?

Many alarm systems, such as security, lift and fire alarms, use PSTN lines to link to alarm receiving centres. When these lines are switched off, alarm systems relying on the PSTN line will stop working, meaning that properties will no longer be monitored remotely.

This will affect millions of systems that are still reliant on the PSTN network, but it’s also an opportunity to update these older alarm systems. They are already susceptible to interruptions or faulty lines that prevent them from working. Many of these systems are now expensive to maintain and aren’t as reliable as they were.

If you have one of the older systems, now is the time to look to a more modern system that can offer greater reliability and functionality and make you ready for the Big Switch Off.

What happens next?

The ending of copper wire-based services has already begun. To achieve the transformation by the end of December 2025, Openreach is taking a “stop sell” approach to copper wire services once areas around an exchange reach 75% fibre coverage.

This means certain products will no longer be sold and specific services to these types of products will also cease, such as adding extra lines to existing systems.

There’s no need to panic, but to ensure that you aren’t left with an alarm system that doesn’t function after 2025, and to future-proof your alarm system, you need to explore and understand your options now.

The first step to check is whether your alarm system runs in a digital or analogue system. If it relies on the analogue system, such as the Redcare dual line and multi-line systems, you do have a number of options.

You can upgrade your whole system if your current one is of an older design and you would benefit from a modern system to deliver better capabilities to keep your business safer.

Alternatively, you may be able to switch your current alarm or security system to a digital network by upgrading it.
